Salvage progress

Jan 19 After the capsizing of the Rocknes in the vicinity of Vatlestraumen, Norway SMIT Salvage BV was awarded the salvage contract together with Eide Marine Services AS as sub contractor at 18:00 hrs local time.

Jan 28 The casualty was towed in her inverted state towards the protected area of the CCB yard and was safely secured alongside quay 11 where preparatory activities commenced prior to the parbuckling operation.

Feb 1 Divers completed operation to seal off bunker oil tanks.

Feb 2 Victim recovery operation starts.

Feb 6 Salvage methodology chosen.

Feb 10 Victim recovery operation suspended. 2 victims still missing.

Feb 9 Divers completed preparing ballast tanks for filling with water and/or air pressurisation.

Feb 18 Outfitting of Eide Marine Services AS for parbuckling started at Hoylandsbygd.

Feb 20 NCC was appointed as rock anchor subcontractor and excavating operation commenced on Monday 23 February.

Feb 27 Completed underwater activities with respect to deckfitting removal, which were obstructing the passage of the parbuckling/hold back wires, and fitting filling valves to ballast tanks. Operation included underwater removal of 22 tons free fall tower crane.

Feb 29 Arranged valves, bollards (to connect rigging unto) and bilge keel wire guides (to ensure heavy wires run on top of the shipsframes) on Rocknes bottom plating.

Mar 1 Additional salvage equipment and wires for rigging arriving by sea transport, and start fitting sheerstrake protectors.

Mar 3 Arrival of and commencement of fitting the hatch coaming protectors.

Mar 5 Commence positioning of holdback/pull wires.

Mar 11 All sheerstrake (40 pieces) and hatchcoaming protectors (18 pieces) installed by the divers.

Mar 12 All pull and hold back wires (total 24 pieces each with a diameter of approximately 100 mm) rigged around the Rocknes.

Mar 17 Rock anchor installation completed (28 pieces with holding power of 250 tons each). Arrival of Eide Marine spread: two pull barges and 1 lifting barge. Completed connecting 12 holdback wires to rock anchor foundation on the quayside.

Mar 18

Completed mooring pull barge Eide 28. Four of total of six wires connected up to rock anchors on Westerly shore. Divers pressure testing tanks on Rocknes.

Mar 19 All six wires of pull barge Eide 28 connected up to rock anchors on Westerly shore. Four out of six pull wires connected between Rocknes and pull barge 28. Wires transferred with towing winch of SMIT Orca.

Mar 20 Completed connecting up pull barge 28. Pull barge 33 moored in position alongside pull barge 28. Chains of all four chainpullers connected up to rock anchors on Westerly shore. Divers continued with ballast tank pressure testing.

Mar 21

Completed connecting up 2nd pull barge to Western shore (four chains and two wires). Start connecting up 2nd pull barge to Rocknes (six wires to be connected).

Mar 22

Connected up remaining pull wires between second pull barge and Rocknes. The vessel is now completely set up with respect to rigging.

Mar 23 Pressurised a number of tanks with air and filled some other tanks with seawater. This resulted the vessel to lift.

Mar 24 Air leaks found in two ballast tanks. Repairs were necessary, and these lasted through the day.

Mar 25 Ballast tanks repaired.

Mar 26 Vessel’s bouyancy was increased.

Mar 27 After ballasting the vessel and after doing a tryout pull, all preparations had been completed. The parbuckling of the vessel was started.

Mar 28 The parbuckling operation moved forward as planned. When the vessel reached a gradient of approximately 130 degrees, the salvage team stopped the pulling. They then pumped water out, and air into the vessel to reach its original draft depth. A special team started conserving some of the vessel’s instruments and machinery and salvors started to spray parts of the vessel with anti-corrosion material. This work continues for some days.

Mar 29 Holds were dewatered and the vessel was deballasted. The vessel now has only a slight lift and its condition is stable. One of the two missing victims was found and the body was recovered successfully.

Mar 30 A team of 12 is searching for the one remaining victim. A start is being made with the derigging of the vessel.

Mar 31 The search for the missing victim continued. Dewatering and derigging continued.

Apr 1 Engine room dewatered to allow conservators and victim search party in. One of the pull barges was completely derigged and towed away. The same goes for second pull barge.

Apr 2 Derigging continues. During the weekend, ‘Rocknes’ will be moored alongside the quay and later it will be towed to a dry dock where it will undergo repairs.

Apr 2/3 Derigging continued.

Apr 4 The vessel was towed to a dry dock in Bergen where it was safely delivered.
